Tips to Stay Lice Free

At Nit Whackers, we understand the importance of maintaining a lice-free environment. Below, you will find valuable tips on how to prevent and stay lice-free.

Lice Facts and Precautions

At Nit Whackers, we’re not just experts—we’re researchers too! Since there’s limited new information about the latest super lice strains, we conduct our own experiments to stay ahead.

Here’s what we’ve discovered: While it’s commonly said that lice can only survive off the scalp for 24–48 hours, one of our experiments showed that they can last up to 3 days. However, after 48 hours, the lice became extremely lethargic, making it unlikely they could cause further infestation.

What does this mean for you? You still don’t need to deep clean your home! Simply follow a few targeted precautions, such as washing bedding and cleaning hair tools, to stay lice-free. Read on to learn more!

Regularly Check

for Lice

One of the best ways to stay lice-free is to regularly check for lice. By inspecting your hair and scalp frequently, you can catch any infestations early and take appropriate action

  • Tie it Up! Keep long hair styled in braids, buns, or ponytails to minimize exposure.
  • Reduce Contact: These styles make it harder for lice to transfer through close head-to-head contact.
  • Minty Fresh Defense: Add an extra layer of protection with a preventative peppermint spray.

Avoid Sharing Personal Items

Lice can easily spread through sharing personal items such as combs, hats, and hair accessories. Encourage your family members to use their own belongings to prevent the spread of lice.

Keeping Hairbrushes and Accessories Lice-Free

  • Remove Strands: Clear all hair from brushes and accessories—lice love to cling to strands and can transfer within 24 hours.
  • Freeze or Boil: Soak your brushes and accessories in hot, soapy water to make sure no lice stick around. Freeze or Boil for extra peace of mind, either freeze items in a sealed plastic bag for 2 days or boil them in water until safe to handle.

Bedding and Clothing

  • Wash Thoroughly: Wash all bedding and clothing used by the infested individual in the past 4–5 days. Place the items in the dryer at the highest level of heat for a minimum of 45 minutes.
  • Care for Delicates: Items like stuffed animals or things that may shrink in the dryer can be placed in a sealed bag for 5 days to ensure all lice are eliminated.

Carpets, Rugs and Furniture

Vacuum all carpets, rugs and furniture, focusing on areas where the infested individual has been in contact within the last 24 hours.

An alternative to vacuuming is to place a sheet or blanket over your couches for 4-5 days.

Avoid Re-infestation - Notifying others

  • Communication is Key: Inform family and friends with whom you have close contact. The best way to prevent future outbreaks or reinfestations is to ensure that everyone around you is screened and treated for lice, if necessary.

  • Not Everyone Itches: Only about 50% of people show symptoms of lice, like head scratching. This means someone can be infested and not even realize it.

Clear communication and early detection can make all the difference in staying lice-free! It starts with you by stopping the spread of the cycle!
